I always idolized the 1950s lifestyle. As a young girl, I wanted a poodle skirt and saddle shoes. I would watch with such wonder and amazement when I would come across a 1950s era special on “The Home of the Future”
The cars were better, the clothes prettier and the people classier. So, I now admit that despite a tomboyish personality and a “I-Can-Do-Anything-A-Boy-Can-Do” attitude, I’ve always harbored a secret desire to be this woman:
Deep down inside my little tomboy heart, I wanted to be able to make delicious meals, to sew the Halloween costumes for my future children. To be as comfortable in the kitchen donning an apron as I am on the front porch of my house with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other.
And so it shall begin. This idea came to me one day while I was lounging about the house in my unemployed state, watching old movies. I started reading an old post from a LiveJournal account that I had years ago. The post started because of a conversation that my friend Paul and I had outside of the coffee shop where he worked at that time. We talked about the fact that people used to be more polite, more well-mannered and all around classier. We decided that we should start to live our lives that way and vowed that 2005 would bring about a better version of ourselves. We started, but a few weeks ago, 6 years after our original conversation, I realized that it was time to kick it up a notch and put on my apron.
First things first, it’s time to dust off that sewing machine and start sewing that apron.
